Wine Outlet E Newsletter 6/5/13 – Wine Class Sale!
Wine Class Sale! Next Five Classes: was $65 now $30 Classes at the Seattle Wine School located at the Wine Outlet are now in full swing. While many wine enthusiasts have been attending these classes for years (since 1982!) still others are not familiar with the school. So as an incentive to give the classes a try I’m having a sale. The next five classes will be offered at just $30 each. The classes are limited in size so the sale will be on a first-come first-served basis. Uncovering the Mysteries of Burgundy Series Let’s be honest, Burgundy is not an easy region to understand. Too often I see my customer’s eyes glaze over while they’re trying to select a wine from there. And, if it makes you feel any better, many folks who work in the wine trade aren’t any more enlightened about these wines. That is why an organization of the French government (SOPEXA) asked me to create a class designed to educate the wine trade on these great wines. This class is the result and I have been using it to de-mystify the wines of Burgundy for both consumers and the wine trade for over 20 years. Burgundy, one of the greatest wine regions on the planet, is too complicated to take on all at once so in each class I will cover just one of its major districts. I will explain the history of the place and the appellation system that governs it so it will all make sense. And, of course, we will drink some of the best wines Burgundy has to offer. The first class covers the red wines made around the city of Nuits-Saint-Georges, which are among my favorites. No prior knowledge of the region or of wines at all is necessary. Monday, June 17th, Noble Wine Grape Series: Cabernet Sauvignon, 7-9pm, regular price $65 More details to follow Monday, June 24th, Summer Sparklers! Sparkling Wines Beyond Champagne, 7-9pm, regular price $65 More details to follow July’s class schedule will be announced in next week’s newsletter and our website calendar of events: http://www.seattlewineoutlet. NEW WINE CLASSES |

Sign up now for upcoming classes at the Wine Outlet – space is limited: Monday, May 6th, Matching Wines with Food from 7-9pm, $65 All the practical information you’ll need to make the best decisions when pairing wines with food. You’ll learn why keying in on the components of the food and wine are more important than trying to match the flavors of each. That’s why a tart crisp white can make most seafood sing and those deliciously sweet glazed carrots can obliterate even the best high-end cabs. I originally created and taught this class for the student chefs at Seattle Central Community College culinary arts program. Monday, May 13th, Wine 101, from 7-9pm, $65 I wish I had a class like this when I was starting my career in the wine industry. Back then there were no classes available to learn the basics of wine. It took me years just to figure out how to approach this vast and complicated subject. That is why I created this class and why I believe it is so important to anyone trying to understand wine. I will break out the different areas of study and give an overview of each along with advice about how to begin your studies. Monday, May 20th, 1990 Comparative Tasting, from 7-9pm, $65 This is a rare opportunity to taste wines from the vintage of 1990. April 15, 22, 29, Mastering the Art of Wine Tasting $175 (7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.) It is the backbone of the Seattle Wine School. Other classes will follow including Matching Wines With Food on May 6th and Wine 101 on May 13th. Please call the Wine Outlet to register for classes or email us at wineoutlet@gmail.com. If you are serious about pursuing an education in wine, Mastering the Art of Wine Tasting is the most important wine class you may take. It is a thorough grounding in the skills necessary to taste wines like a professional. I have been teaching and refining this class since 1982. It has been taught to more wine professionals in the Northwest than any other tasting class. It was a key part of the wine training course I created and taught at Seattle Central Community College’s Culinary Arts program as well as a wine certification program I also created and taught for the Washington Wine Commission. I have conducted this class for staff of the Four Season’s Hotel, numerous wineries including the Gallo winery as well as for hundreds of wine professionals and consumers looking to hone their tasting skills. The class is presented in three parts. Part one teaches the basic principals of tasting wine including how the olfactory system functions, the language of wine, identifying aromas and flavors, detecting off odors and, most importantly, how to approach a glass of wine for tasting. Part two focuses on the components of wine. The components are the basic make-up of wines and they include acid, tannin, sugar and alcohol. We will learn how to identify each component and what its function is in a wine. This information is critical to being a good wine taster. Part three is a smell lab where we will sharpen our skills for identifying aromas. At the end of each session we will exercise our new abilities by comparing several of the most important grape varietals. This class always sells out so please don’t wait too long to sign up! That’s it. As always thank you for supporting the Wine Outlet and Greenlake Wines + wine bar Salud! Wine Outlet E Newsletter 3/19/13 – Pig Roast Wines are Here – New Wine Classes Tasting – Pig Roast! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Greetings! The featured wine for this Sunday’s big Pig Roast and sale has arrived! 2009 Barco Negro Douro, Portugal $5 (market value to $15) |
|
The Barco Negro is a red blend from northern Portugal vineyards in the Douro valley. The Douro is the most famous wine region in the country as it is the source of the great Port wines. But this wine is not a port. Port wine is the result of a process whereby the wine is fortified with brandy during fermentation which produces a wine of high alcohol (20%) and lots of residual sugar. But the region also makes lots of excellent dry red table wines and this is one of them. The Barco Negro (named for the “black boats” that traditionally brought wines down the Douro River to the harbor at Oporto) is a delicious, dry yet fruit driven red just bulging with deep black and red fruit flavors and aromas. It is made with three of the top varietals responsible for the best port and table wines in the Douro including Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. But then I’m sure you knew that. The Barco Negro is now open for tasting at both stores but will only be sold on Sunday (at both stores) during the big Pig Roast.
See below for more info on the big Pig Roast. Quilceda Creek Vertical Tasting Monday, April 1st at Wine Outlet Classroom |
|
![]() I have expanded the size of the tasting and now have 4 spots left. If you are a fan or just curious as to what the fuss is about this is a great opportunity. |

Wine Outlet E Newsletter 3/6/13 – 8th Annual Pig Roast! 3/24/13 Greetings! 8th Annual Pig Roast! March 24th (Sunday) Noon to 5:00 Elliott Wine Outlet – no charge It doesn’t seem like it’s been 8 years since I opened the first Wine Outlet in SoDo but apparently it has. That first store opened in March so each year at this time I host a big birthday bash for the stores complete with a big sale and whole roasted pigs. Besides the few Garage Sale events I’ve had over the years the Pig Roast! is the biggest thing there is at the Wine Outlet. This year I will have two whole roasted pigs at the Elliott Wine Outlet. There will be no pig at the Green Lake store but the sale wines will be available there as well. Your friends and (well-behaved kids) are also very welcome. There is no charge. I have yet to select the featured wines but I’ll be sending updates as we get closer to the event. Meanwhile, mark your calendar and tell your friends! |

| Wine Club is (finally) Launched
Seattle Wine Club is now officially launched! Here’s how it works: Each quarter you will receive six bottles of wine that I have personally selected. The wines will be chosen because they are high quality, interesting, often unusual and priced well below the market. Wines will be priced between $12 and $25 each and shipments will average about $100 each. You will have a choice of receiving all red wines, all white or a mix. Perhaps the most enticing reason to join will be the opportunity to take advantage of my special wine deals which will only be available to wine club members. I will alert members via email about these wines and they can buy as many or as few as they choose. To sign up, please visit Seattle Wine Club Seattle Wine Club. Or feel free to call me at either the Elliott Wine Outlet (206) 285-1129 or Greenlake Wines (206) 524-6909 with any questions. |
