Located in the historic town of Menfi in the southwest corner of this idyllic Mediterranean island, MandraRossa is led by Diego Planeta, President of Settesoli, one of Europe’s largest and most respected wineries. MandraRossa’s extensive investment in advanced winemaking technology, combined with the expertise of a distinguished team of five full time winemakers has resulted in an outstanding line of wines that capture the flavors, essence and mystique of Sicily. Sourced from vineyards first planted in 1989 at an altitude of between 650 – 820 feet above sea level, the making of these high-altitude wines began by mapping every parcel of vineyard for aspect, gradient and altitude, so that the ideal terroirs for each varietal could be selected for planting. Thus, from the outset, every chosen parcel could be traced and monitored, back to harvest and beyond. The wines resulting from these intensive efforts were proudly introduced under the MandraRossa name. The intense Sicilian sun, offset by cooling sea breezes, permits reliable and extended ripening of the grapes.

Taste

MandraRossa Pinot Grigio
The grapes are manually harvested in early August. Some portions of the fruit are given skin
contact in order to extract flavor and body. Maturation and storage happens in stainless steel tanks on yeast lees prior to preparation for bottling. Some portions of the blend generally undergo a period of extended lees contact and in tank battonage or agitation of the lees in order to enhance the body and creamy texture of the wine. With melon, pineapple, grapefruit and mineral notes this wine is medium-bodied with ripe tropical fruit flavors and crisp acidity which gives it freshness and balance. Excellent length. Enjoy with chicken and turkey entrées, fish and grilled vegetables. “Best Buy” Wine Enthusiast, April 2010

MandraRossa Fiano
The grapes are manually harvested in mid-August. Maturation and storage in stainless steel tanks on yeast lees prior to preparation for bottling. Some portions of the blend generally undergo a period of extended lees contact and in tank battonage or agitation of the lees in order to enhance the body and creamy texture of the wine. The wine is bottled in February. Brilliant pale yellow with hints of green with aroma’s of ripe tropical fruits and citrus. Medium-bodied and dry with elegant balance. The fruit and citrus aromas on the nose evolve on the palate in an array of fruit flavors. Enjoy with chicken and turkey entrées, fish and grilled vegetables. “Best Value” Wine Spectator, October 15, 2008 “Best Buy” Wine Enthusiast, November 2008

MandraRossa Nero d’Avola
Ruby red with flashes of orange and aromas of black cherry and licorice abound in this smooth and supple wine. 30% of the wine is aged in barrique for six months. The wine is then bottled in April and aged in the bottle for three months. Nero d’Avola demonstrates a notable capacity for aging and is a splendid match with rich, flavorful pasta dishes, grilled red meats and hard, spicy cheeses. A native varietal of Sicily with notes of blackberry and spice. “Top Value From Sicily” Wine Spectator, October 31, 2009

MandraRossa Syrah
The grapes are manually harvested by September 5th. A brief maceration then takes place for one day followed by one week of fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. A small portion of the wine is barrique aged for six months. The wine is then bottled in April and aged in bottle for three months. Bright ruby red Aroma: Offers ripe blackberry fruit intertwined with vanilla aromas. A well defined structure frames the soft, jammy fruit with persistent, integrated tannins and finishes with a
firm, rounded length. Perfect with pizza, rare grilled tuna steak or hearty pastas in red sauce.
“Top Value From Sicily” Wine Spectator, October 31, 2009

Happy Hour

All of our Thursday Tastings occur during Happy Hour. We have $4 glass pours and $4 food items. There is never a corkage fee on bottles. (Value over $20)

As many of you already know, the Paper Zone stores have closed including the SoDo location on First and Holgate. The Wine Outlet shares a portion of the building through a sub-lease arrangement with the Paper Zone folks and when they left my lease was terminated. I tried to negotiate a new lease with the owners of the building but they wanted to lease the entire 15,000 square foot building to one tenant. Consequently I must vacate the store by the end of February and look

The Good News

SoDo Celebration Sale February 24, 25 and 26!

The sale will be the celebration of seven years of the Wine Outlet (the first store opened in SoDo in March, 2005) not a whimpering store-closing sale. This will be a three-day party complete with food and some of the best deals I’ve put together in years. This will be the Mother of All Wine Sales. It will even be bigger than any of the previous Garage Sales. The intent is not to reduce inventory but to pack the store with as many wine deals as I can find.

I’m buying wines specifically for this event. We will not run out of cool wines on the last day so people can come when they have time or come back for more deals.

We’ll have food and lots of wines to taste.

I’ll have more news on the sale shortly. Also, follow the highlights of the sales on Twitter and Facebook.

Super Bowl Wurst Roast! this Sunday 2/5/12 Noon to 5:00 Elliott Wine Outlet (kickoff is 3:30)

Next Sunday is not only the Super Bowl XLVI but the Wine Outlet’s 7th annual Super Bowl Wurst Roast!

It all started back when I opened the first Wine Outlet in SoDo in 2005. I invited anyone who didn’t want to see the game or needed something to do before kickoff to join me for some snacks and some extra good prices on a few wines. What has evolved is now the annual Wurst Roast! which includes lots of sausages slow-roasted over a smokey grill and some exceptional prices on wines.

You can have lunch and be back in front of the TV with some great wine deals well before kickoff. So save the date and tell your friends.
